An Accidental Discovery

In 1865, Charles Steffens was drilling for oil when he unwittingly tapped into the aquifer that is now the source of Vītl Waters® mineral rich water. A few years later, Dr. Dor Kellog, suffering from severe eczema, recalled how swimming in salt water eased the pain of his skin condition. He obtained permission to bathe in one of Steffens’ salt vats and was pleased with the relief he received. He continued daily baths until he was cured of one of the worst cases of eczema on record.

A Horse's Tale

A few years later, an old, gimpy horse that had been put out to pasture spent its time wallowing in the mud and water near an abandoned, leaky salt tank. Soon the horse was no longer limping and became thoroughly rejuvenated. The curative powers of the local water was reinforced.

Word of the therapeutic nature of the water spread quickly. Mt. Clemens, Michigan took on the aura of “bath city.” hotels and bath houses sprang up. The curative baths attracted the likes of Babe Ruth, Mae West, Henry Ford, William Randolph Hearst, Jack Dempsey and other celebrities along with people from all walks of life. Visitors returned annually for relief from their aches and pains. The baths were regarded as almost “miraculous” in nature.
